Community has many faces and many meanings. This page offers links to a wide variety of community resources on poverty relief, peace, justice and human rights,  of interest to persons of faith. The list begins with a description of a new or ongoing project of special note.

An exciting venture in Portland, Oregon that is engaging faith communities in ending homelessness. Called the "New City Initiative" (NCI), it is a partnership between Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon (EMO) and JOIN (www.joinpdx.com), a Portland-area nonprofit that supports people in efforts to end their homelessness. Funded in 2010 by a grant from the Louisville Institute, NCI recently launched a course for faith-based communities who are interested in creating community with persons who are experiencing and transitioning out of homelessness. The goal of the project is that each participating congregation will envision and create its own unique response to this need and those affected by homelessness in their communities. The initiative got its name from the inspiration of St. Basil of Caesarea, the fourth-century bishop who launched one of the most famous early Christian institutions to house, tend, train, and support sick, poor, hungry, and homeless persons in need; his project was so successful it was called the "new city." For more about the initiative, visit NCI's Facebook page or contact its director, C. Paul Schroeder, at newcityinitiative [at] gmail [dot] com.
